Asset integrity management plays a vital part in ensuring safe and optimal operation of any well.

In contrast to conventional subsea well monitoring methods, once installed, WellSentinel™ operates completely remotely, providing continuous, passive and autonomous monitoring of a well or carbon capture site.

The system’s long term remote capability means no need for active power subsea, routine system checks or an umbilical communication to surface. Easily integrated with existing integrity management systems, our suite of technologies can be applied across all stages of the well lifecycle.

How it works

WellSentinel™ provides passive monitoring by gathering and physically detecting specific gas and/or fluid material in the subsea marine environment that escapes during a loss of containment (LoC).

A gathering system directs escaped material onto our proprietary trigger mechanism housed within the system. Detection of this material begins the alert sequence, mechanically degrading the trigger.

The system’s trigger mechanism can be configured to react with a range of materials.

  • Gas – Our gas triggers are set to typical natural gas (C1 – C5)
  • Oil/Multiphase flow – Our hydrocarbon triggers are set to react with well-based fluid and gas
  • CO2 - Set to react to CO2, for use in CCS fields and infrastructure
  • Tracer – Our tiggers can be set to react with out fluid tracer (SWIFT), this is sealed in the well during shut in or suspension

Sentinel alert

Once exposed to a critical volume of the desired material, an alert beacon is then released to the water’s surface. Once at surface, the alert beacon turns on and communicates via satellite.

Each alert beacon is individually coded, allowing for accurate identification of a subsea incident.

System types

The WellSentinel™ portfolio consists of three systems, allowing for monitoring across the extensive range of potential well types and structures.

WellSentinel™ Oyster

WellSentinel™ Oyster is mounted and secured directly onto a subsea structure, ensuring it gathers the required material to trigger the alert sequence.

Built to affix to various subsea wellhead protection structures (WHPS) and Xmas trees canopies, the robust and compact system is locked in place and maintains overtrawlability and dropped object protection (13kJ design impact). Design guidance is based on NORSOK U-001 and BS EN ISO:13628-1.

WellSentinel™ Coral

WellSentinel™ Coral is deployed as a replacement for a standard Temporary Abandonment (Debris) Cap, when a well has no protection structure or Xmas tree in place.

Placed directly onto the conductor, it is a quick and easy operation to swap out the existing component. With its conical shape, the system adds minimal height to the structure and retains the critical impact protection for wellhead.

WellSentinel™ Frond

A seabed monitoring system that is positioned and secured on the mudline around the asset of interest. The system offers wider wellsite coverage and can be deployed if there is limited capacity on the asset's canopy. The system is positioned following analysis of subsea tidal patterns.
